About this Pilot

The pilot study assessed Thinking Crown's AI teacher's impact on reading comprehension. Led by the TC founder, it compared pre- and post-test reading levels among African American, Latinx, ELL, and diverse learners.

Main Findings

  • African American students improved by 80%.

  • Latinx students improved by 66.7%.

  • Diverse learners improved remarkably, with scores increasing by 200-250%.

 

Participants

Seventy students participated in the study, all of whom attended an ethnically diverse school in Chicago. The students encompassed a variety of backgrounds, including Black/African American, Asian, White, Latinx, and diverse learners.

 

Study Design and Procedures

The study used a combined approach, integrating time series and observational designs, targeting "lost learning" post-summer break. Students used the app for self-paced learning, received AI feedback, and engaged in collaborative assignments. Multiple comprehension quizzes guided by the AI teacher aimed to enhance skills. Common Core-aligned assessments measured progress.
